Call me a sore loser but after watching most of the 2009 Mens Wimbledon final between Mr. Roboto Federer vs Please-Let-Me-Win-Just-Once Roddick I felt let down and angry. Not at Roddick for losing (yet again 19-2 vs Federer) but because I'm so very tired of the Tiger Woods of Tennis I have barely watched the sport in 5 years.
But winning is a good thing right? Sure, but you get to the point where watching the three hour movie is pointless because you know how it is going to end. So much so that even though Roddick played out of his mind today I wasn't on the edge of my seat waiting for him to win, rather I was guessing when his final mistake would occur to let his cyborg opponent win again. (in the fifth set 14-16, another record) And win Federer did in his usual faked-emotional response that soon turned back to a cold-smugness that even made tennis legend Sampras look warm and fuzzy.
Afterward I can only image what was going through Roddicks mind (Perhaps maybe he should retire and stop the yearly heartache?) but one thing that was fantastic was his interview directly after his crushing loss where he was on the verge of tearing up, gave kudos to Federer, thanked the crowed and you could tell he meant it. Then Federer comes up and looks bored and ready for tea. He didn't congratulate Roddick until the commentator pushed him to mention his name. And what was his response to now having the most wins ever? He says he is sad he didn't win it last year, but it was 'nice to have it back'. That's it. You just set a freakin' world record you could at least try to look excited! I mean his responses were that of a man who got an 'Employee of the Week" award or something.
To get back to the original point (sorry for the rant) is that for almost a decade you couldn't watch a tennis match without "Williams" or "Federer" in the title. Same in the 1990's when "Jordon" was synomomis with "NBA Championship" or for what seems like an eternity "Tiger wins X open". We all love a winner and adore superstars but doesn't there come a time when you have to realize the sport may actually be better off without you? Jordon did it (and came back but then left again) Sampras did it as well and I just pray that Federer follow suit but I doubt that would happen. (He mentioned he isn't going anywhere.. fantastic) Same can be said of the Williams sisters (doubles as well as singles) and no one better dominates their sport like Tiger Woods. I don't follow golf but I honestly don't know one other professional golfer's name! I don't think I've even seen a commercial even for golf balls with another person.
So here is an open question to everyone; Can superstars of any sport become more of a determent over time or should we just sit back and enjoy the lack of competition and marvel in their yearly win count?
